Michael - They Need to Be Reminded

Read below to see the progression of my day as I woke up trying to get some motivation for what should be a national musical holdiay. Read on and experience the dismay, disgust, and dissappointment I had at 4:00 p.m.

To: 8 Friends and Lovers of all things MJ

I was talking with my roommate Alex and we have decided to have a little gathering to honor the late great kind of pop on the anniversary of his passing. I am extending an invite to all of you. The night will feature:

  • A power hour video mix of his greatest songs
  • Moonwalking
  • Joose
  • Crotch grabbing and subsequent yelling to the beat of the music
  • A box filled with all things fun (eileen and kate? ;P ).
  • Glittery socks and gloves
  • etc. etc.

So if you feel like coming out, Cha-mon Then!

No responses? Not even Claire? Well then I guess no one plans on mourning MJ but those of us at the 407.

Its cool. Im not judging. Thats for you to do. Each and everyone of you. Take a deep deep look at that mirror... or should I say the man in that mirror. Do you like what you see? Maybe you should Make a Change (man in the mirror) you got to, you got to, (make that change)...

Dance to the invisible music

Public transportation truly brings out the oddest characters in any city.

I see it myself day in & day out in the New York City subway system.  Apparently the DC Metro does as well.

This is not exactly a music post...but it's not not exactly a music post. Clearly there's music playing SOMEWHERE in this video, we just can't hear it.

I recommend celebrating the summer solstice with this bro.
Turn on your favorite tunes, pop open this video in full screen, and enjoy the mad crunchy dancing yo.

Zach Deputy "I love this brah"

This guy has been the breakout star of my 2010 summer playlist.

Just...just look at him:

This guy just oozes machismo.

Taking a page out of Keller's book, Deputy is a one man band who crafts his song by looping tracks and adding effects. His songs range the gamut of topics, but you can tell this brah is simply about having fun. Dance your ass off and spin around where you are fun, not Jack Johnson "woaah this is a big wave maaan" fun.

Anyways, check out his track here "Tubesteak" - gives you a great idea of how he layers the song together. Starting with a guitar lick, thne beatboxing the beat...drop it all out...and put it all back together...simple formula with incredible results.

Hop over to his site here: http://www.zachdeputy.com
...and be sure to see him whenever he's around...a ticket won't set you back much at all and you'll have witnessed some future greatness. Take it from me...saw him at Mtn. Jam VI this year and haven't second guessed the man's musical genius.

The 19 Most Hilariously Failed Attempts at Sexy Album Covers | Cracked.com

A pretty amazing tribute to some of the worst "almost sexy but not at all" albums covers of all time was posted up on Cracked.com Check it out. Be forewarned some of the images while hilarious are better not viewed where coworkers can catch a glimpse and judge. Enjoy.

My Morning Jacket - One Big Holiday 4/28/10

Woah.

My Morning Jacket tore it up in Charleston, SC this past Wednesday.

This band is the best out there.

Here's the proof.

That is all.

New Noise From "Sleigh Bells"

Quite literally the duo known as "Sleigh Bells" make noise for a living.

However, that 'noise' producer Derek Miller and singer Alexis Krauss create is organized, crunked, and turned up to 11.

This Brooklyn band is ready to break despite being relatively unknown. (Though you may remember I did a post on them when they 'released' their first single last year.)

Here they are again with more bone crunching noise on the track Tell 'Em...and it's beautiful.

Kick back with The XX

One of the more chill albums I have heard in a while, The XX has proven to be a quality companion at work when I am trying to tune out. Most of the songs on the album are slow paced and have a somewhat entrancing vibe to them. Songs of note: Intro, VCR, Crystalised, Islands, and Infinity. Check them out. Let me know what you think.

In B Flat is In-credible

There are almost no words necessary.

http://www.inbflat.net/

Darren Solomon of "Science For Girls" took submissions from users playing multiple instruments in Bb.

By embedding them on a single page as tiny videos, you can play some or all of the videos, starting them at any time, in any order...and you come out with a beautiful body of music.

It's genius, it's simple, its beautiful it's MIND BLOWING.

Enjoy! :)

The Johnny Cash Project

How do you go about creating a music video for a song performed by the late Johnny Cash?

Crowd-source it of course!

The Johnny Cash Project is an interactive site launched by designer Aaron Koblin.

The goal is to create a music video for Cash's rendition of "Ain't No Grave" by having people trace over archival footage of the Man in Black.

Once complete, the contributed pieces will be stitched together into a complete video that will look...well...awesome. It will have that rotoscoping feel, while leaving open the possibility of creative minds to add their own subtle nuances and ideas.

Head over to the site now where you can explore the video with the current frames that have been submitted (it's already INSANELY cool looking.)
YOU can also contribute to the project as well. Click the 'contribute' button and you will be presented with a frame of your own to trace and submit! Your drawing may just be added in the final cut!

Weekend Recovery Steps

Wow, I had a wild weekend that involved me carrying a birch tree on my shoulders at 4am.

How was yours? Equally as awesome I hope.

Here's what we missed during this weekends shenanigans:

- Dr. Dog (Again?!) got a Daytrotter session (Again!?!?) posted.
Dr. Dog fans, don't hesitate...check it out now. Stellar live performances of some tracks off of the brand new Shame, Shame as well as a spaced out/trippy, "Army of Ancients" off of Fate.

- Legendary English band Blur released their first new recording in seven years. The 7" was released in conjunction with Record Store Day which occurred this Saturday April 17, 2010 to support local record stores around the globe. Only 1,000 copies of the release were made available in the UK, so the band has released the track, "Fool's Gold" for free download on their site.
(You can stream it right here in high quality below)

- Record Store Day featured a boat load of new releases, re-issues, and rare performances. Honestly too much to name, but thankfully Pitchfork picked up the slack at the end of last week and posted a definitive guide. I recommend hitting up eBay if you're looking for anything in particular as it was probably gone within minutes on the actual day.

- Oh and Coachella happened, ending yesterday night. Just Google it or YouTube it or something for all of that.

Ruth Flowers is DJ Mamy Rock

When most people reach the ripe old age of 69, they start thinking about grand kids, retirement, and bus trips to Atlantic City.

But for Ruth Flowers a.k.a. DJ Mamy Rock, she's more hardcore now than ever.

CHECK IT:

BBC Interview:

That's right, this granny spins it with the best of them.

In her own words, "I’d rather sign a contract with a record company than to sign up for the nursing home…"

Couldn't agree more, keep doin' what you do Mamy!

Do Yourself a Favor: New Dr. Dog "Shame, Shame"

I've mentioned the indie/psychedelic rock act Dr. Dog before on the blog when they signed with Anti-Records in the middle of last year.
That same post I mention a "new album in the works"...a followup to their 2008 release "Fate" which was received very positively by most.

Well, here we are almost a year later, and we can run down to our favorite music outlet and pickup a copy of that very album, "Shame, Shame" (Released 4/06/10 on ANTI-).

I'm going to throw this out there, Shame, Shame is in my opinion, Dr. Dog's greatest studio effort to date. The album as a whole naturally comes off with that Dr. Dog feel...often one can relate it to the sound of rock in the 60's...the Beatles, the Beach Boys, etc. Yet the song choices on this album are darker and grittier, more closely emulating the sound of Dr. Dog in a live setting. Other influences are noticeable on the album as well...I hear some very David Bowie-esque moments throughout the record.

The first standout single on the album is, "Stranger" which the guys performed on Jimmy Fallon:

Anyways, Pick this up ASAP - I know Target (blech) was running a special and selling it for $7.99 "while supplies last" so check there first. Personally I think I'm gonna pick it up on vinyl when I catch them on tour May 15!!! (EXCITEMENT!)

Here's their tour dates from this point forward:
April 14 Toronto, ON Lee's Place
April 15 Ann Arbor, MI Blind Pig
April 16 Chicago, IL Metro / Smart Bar
April 17 Minneapolis, MN Fine Line Music Cafe
April 19 Aspen, CO Belly Up Aspen
April 20 Englewood, CO Gothic Theatre
April 22 Boise, ID Neurolux
April 23 Portland, OR Wonder Ballroom
April 24 - 25 San Francisco, CA Great American Music Hall
April 27 Los Angeles, CA Music Box at Fonda
April 29 Santa Fe, NM Santa Fe Brewing Company

Why not? Wednesday

There are many strange things to fear in this world. Spiders. Clowns. Plateface. But, none compare to the hilarity Alektorophobia.

Alektorophobia is defined as the fear of chickens. Those who are victims of fear of chickens are afraid of every detail physical part of the chicken, like its feathers, eggs, or any other contaminated body part.

So, every time the chicken in your neighborhood roosts, your panic starts and you feel suffocated where you seek any possibility of confronting chickens.

Thank Maury for providing us with this edition of Why not? Wednesday:

Phish Phriday - Gettin Jiggy

"Phish Phriday" is something I've been doing for my Facebook friends for some time now.

It's not a very innovative idea...as I'd imagine similar things were going around 'rec.music.phish' since the internet hay-day (albeit without the accompanying videos).

Anyways, I figure I'm already posting a video and description in one place, I might as well circulate it to Coffee Con where it can be seen by those not fortunate enough to be friends with meh...heh

Anyways, these are usually things I'd post up here on CoffeeCon anyway. Gems from the 1000's of songs and shows the band has played.

Here's todays and it's a doozie:

Phish Phriday - This has been a beautiful week and is shaping up for more of the same over the weekend. Kick it off now and get jiggy with Fishman. This is from the Hampton shows featured in the Hampton Comes Alive set. Fishman had thrown cue cards with the lyrics earlier into the crowd, which he read off of...though...honestly, who didn't know every word to the Will Smith classic in 1998? As if this weren't enough..."Jiggy" gets it's own vac solo!! Enjoy your weekend and remember, "...Just bite it, it's for the look."

Neutral Uke Hotel

Multi-instrumentalist Shawn Fogel has set out on an awesome indie adventure.

He's going to play the legendary album, In The Aeroplane Over The Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel...entirely on a Ukulele.

...come on, this sounds amazing. I'd keep an eye on that official Shawn Fogel (golden bloom) page as he will be announcing May 2010 tour dates where you can hear him do his thing.

8-Bit Dark Side of the Moon

Brad Smith, a video game programmer out of Ontario, has re-created the legendary "Dark Side of the Moon" album by Pink Floyd.

However this is no ordinary re-creation with instruments and band members. He has done it within the bounds of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). That's right...an entire rock album in all it's 8-BIT glory.

Head over to the official site for links to download the album in it's entirety or to stream tracks individually over on YouTube.

Friday Gem - Born Ruffians "Sole Brother"

Here's one my buddy Miles is sure to enjoy.

The song is Sole Brother which is off of their upcoming album "Say It", set to be released June 1st of this year.

Stream it live below!

Born Ruffians - "Sole Brother"

The song has a great bass line and comes off as a perfectly chilled out "danceable" summer hit. While BR haven't necessarily hit mainstream fame...this song could push them there, while still keeping long time fans happy.

This song was also played when the gang assembled for a Daytrotter Session. There, you can hear it played in a tight live setting and guitarist/vocalist Luke LaLonde describes how the song came to be.

I caught the Ruffians when they opened for Vampire Weekend at a Summer Stage a few years back and they were great then. This album is sure to be on my purchase list this year as it should be yours.

Friday Goes In Like a Lamb and Out Like a Lion

...at least that's how it is for me.

Wake up, splash some water on the face, throw on a coat, and head into work; Mind still dizzy making sense of whatever you dreamt last night.

That's until you pop in your earbuds and play "Manah, Manah" a Cake gem off of their "B-Sides and Rarities" album (though it originally appeared on the '02 album "For The Kids" which had various artists performing hits for the kiddies. Here's the Amazon link to that)

If that doesn't make you feel good about the end of the week nothing will.

Sit tight, the afternoon is here, which means in a few more hours...we can all enjoy a beer or 12. (That's the "going out like a lion part")

Have a good weekend!

PS - you didn't think I'd leave without also posting the muppet version, did you?

Goldblum Rainbow Candy - Another Site Amongst the Greats

Taking a page out of the 'Tom Sellick Waterfall Sandwich' and 'Bea Arthur Mountains Pizza' comes a new one.

"Jeff Goldblum Rainbow Candy"

http://goldblumrainbowcandy.tumblr.com/

...this one is just getting underway but it, like Jeff Goldblum, it's pure awesomeness.

Soon enough these sites are going to spawn a site that is just a hub for like minded sites (say that 10 times fast!) A wacky portal of celebrities and odd objects.

Anyways, enjoy :)

Blitzen Trapper Announce New Album / World Tour

Some great news today as Blitzen Trapper have announced a June 8th release for Destroyer of the Void on SubPop. This is the follow up to the 2008's amazing Furr which dominated my stereo late that year and even found it's way into some commercials

If you haven't heard this band...get on it now. Their sound is based in folk rock but they also bring an experimental vibe to their music. With each album, they've expanded on the sound and I think "DotV" will be no exception. Just another step along the path to greatness for BT.

Just to keep you anticipatin' they've released a song off the album for free titled, "Heaven and Earth". Give it a listen by streaming it below!

Monday Morning Happenings

What a day already.

Seems like the Healthcare bill passed...I can tell because it's 99% of the conversations I hear going on around the office.

I've also gotten a lot of links to this sweet vid taken at a recent Ben Folds show.
Ben, following the lead of 'Merton' who initially came up with this idea in his home, took it a step further and actually broadcast to Chat Roulette from a LIVE show. I love this mix of reality and virtuality. A really neat idea and the camera angle is awesome for anyone who saw it FROM chat roulette, staring right at Ben and the crowd.

...and in other news...my March Madness brackets are pretty much busted. Thanks to Kansas, my office pool is dead and I ended Round 1 in like a 30 way tie for 5th over at the great Coventry Music blog pool.

Ah well...enjoy the Monday as best as possible.

We're Not In Kansas Anymore

Check this out!

This young girl totally rips apart the Kansas classic, "Carry On Wayward Son".

If you don't already feel like a talentless sap...I urge you to notice she's not just playing the organ but also a drum pad with her left foot while tinkering with the effects using her right foot. Look closely, its incredible stuff.

A Waynes World Time Warp Continuum

There have been many awesome things that people have found using Google Maps' voyeur tool "Street View".

From drunk people passed out in the grass, to prostitutes on the corner, there's a Street View for everyone. (JOY!)

This one though on the streets of the UK is truly the most shocking.

(Check the link for authenticity...it's REAL)

Video for Devendra Banhart's Baby

Found this link via illRoots.com who seem to be first on the block with this one.

You probably remember I posted a LIVE version of the song where I hoped and CORRECTLY anticipated this track would be on his then upcoming (now released) album: What Will We Be

Anyway, the video is great...very laid-back like the song...and produces a very Spring /Summer seasonal vibe. Perfectly timed as the warm weather slowly starts up again here in the Northeast.

OH and how could I forget a few cameos...look out for Andrew VanWyngarden of MGMT and Fabrizio Moretti of The Strokes!

Mama You're My Hard Luck Soul

some of the best right here...covered by many (most notably for me Phish) but this is the original "Corrina" by Taj Mahal from the late 60's.

Bound to be your new favorite song for this summer's bbq.

Dent May Makes it to Daytrotter

My second post of 2010...so, so, so, sad...and I really do apologize.

2010 brought along with it a new job. While that should be GREAT news, it means I've got to do a whole lot more work and a whole lot more paying attention now than I was with my last that I was settled into.

Anyways, enough about me...here's my favorite Eukele player 'Dent May' who did a session with the guys over at Day Trotter.

Check it out here

One of my fav's is "God loves you michael chang" def...ch-check it out.

have some dance parties this weekend too!

Each little snail here know how to wail here, thats why its hotta under the wata

Yes, this is a throwback. I was sitting here working, talking to JJ about weekend adventures, when he tells me through actions not to be mentioned how he was nicknamed "Octopus." As I began a tirade of jokes randomly the mere mention of the word "Octopus" put the song Under the Sea in my head. I tried to get the beat and masterful lyrics off my mind, but couldn't resist the urge to youtube it and sing-a-long like it was 1989 and I was the only boy in the theatre watching the Little Mermaid. I figured I would share my random moment of musical nostalgia with the rest of you.

Is it 2012 yet?

WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO!?

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
