Check This Out: Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeroes

cool new band I stumbled across on the interwebs.

Will fill the indie/freak folk/pop void in my life until Devendra's new release.

Here's their incredible set at the ever epic and oft mentioned Coffee Con site Daytrotter.com

R.I.P. - DJ AM

Never really listened, but his story is a pretty crazy one.

Came across this on the ZubazPants.com forums.

I 'get' the talent...

Shut Up and Listen Thursday

I'm off tomorrow, Friday, and that makes me smile.

Work has been tough lately, but I've completed a big project, so hopefully can get back to updating more frequently.

For now, just shut up and listen to these...you'll enjoy them.

Girls - "Lust For Life"

Wilco- "You Never Know"

Forget The Paper...Just give This Guy Some Pens

Caught this incredible video of a rapper out of South Philly known as Lyric (a.k.a. Lyrical God).

Based off of his name alone we understand his writing prowess. But this video proves he can let the beat build too.

Leave the paper at home...he just needs the pens.

Worst Idea of the Week: "Winkers"

Not really sure I need to go in depth on this one.

"Pants with an object that your ass animates when you walk."

(That's not really their slogan, but it should be)

Friday Afternoon Oddity

The NFL's Official online store at http://www.nflshop.com has a great selection of clothing and accessories for all of your favorite teams.

What's that you say? They even have Jersey's for dogs!?

I wonder what jersey would look good on my pooch? Say perhaps a #7 Eagles jersey?

Look the NFL shop even let's you customize the shirt so you can see it before you purchase...double awesome!

Well that's strange...for some reason...they won't let me enter my dogs name in the custom field.
His name is Victor, but we call him Vick for short...must be something wrong with the website or a bug in the code.

(Seriously, haha check it out, can't customize with Vick. Bizzare-o considering he is actually a player:

MGMT Thursday

Aiden and I have been using the awesome social music service http://blip.fm to have an MGMT "blip-off" today.

Keeping with the MGMT madness, I found this awesome cover of "Time To Pretend" by, The Pierces (whom I believe are primarily made up of the two chicks) and Gonzalez (the piano dude...maybe?).

Rolling Stones Lost Documentary Surfaces

This new documentary surfaced of The Stones. It was banned from release and hidden away until it recently hit the net.

Keith Richards once famously explained about it, “if anyone in America saw it, we’d never be let in the country again.”

It's pretty awesome to watch, fan of the band or not...a great glimpse into the life of rock and roll stars in the early 70's

Flavorwire.com has a great little piece on it with some still images.
Also they found a link to a French website where the entire documentary is available for streaming...though get it while you can before its taken down.

WTF Wednesday

I don't really know how to preface this one.

Two things I want to know:

1) Who started this sport?
2) Who chose this song for the routine?

The Decline of Ed Hardy

The popularity of "Ed Hardy" really blew up out of nowhere.
One celebrity wore it once...and that was all it took for the entire world to catch on.

Nowadays, the Ed Hardy designs are everywhere you look. On shirts, on shoes, on glasses, on towels. Try going to a beach and NOT seeing something Ed Hardy. You can't, I've looked.

I thought my friends and I were the only ones sick of it but apparently not.

I found this video "Fuck Ed Hardy" on YouTube and it supposedly features Dirt Nasty, Rich Hill and Andy Milonakis. (Andy being the only one of the three I've ever heard of. Never liked him either, but this officially knocks him a rung up in my books). It gave me a chuckle.

What's your take on the Ed Hardy craze?

Show Us Your Jammers of the Day

Get your mind out of the gutter boy! This is a completely safe-for-work post about an up and coming Bay Area band called, Still Flyin'

I came across this rather large group of bros and bras (what do you call a female bro anyway?) while STILL digging through mounds of obscure reviews from this years SXSW.

The fun/energy the band exudes quickly spills out in their tunes and it's sure to catch your attention.

The amazingly lucky bastards over at Daytrotter got the band to stop by for a quick set and put up the results on their site yesterday. I've got, "Runaway Train II" from the set, below for you to listen to as well as the official video for their track Rope Burn.

RatDog & Friends? Another GD spinoff with a twist

Anyone who has went to http://www.phillesh.net recently has surely been hit with a big surprise.

Apparently, there is a new band on the loose dubbed, "Further"

The members include: Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Jeff Chimenti, John Kadlecik, Jay Lane, Joe Russo.

Did I just hear you say WOW? I know I at least heard you gasp...

Apparently any tension between the original boys Bobby and Phil has been ironed out and they are joined by an array of talented musicians, clearly familiar with the work of the Dead. Chimenti being keyboardist for The Dead and RatDog ~ Kadlecik, guitar/vocals for arguably the most popular GD cover band, Dark Star Orchestra ~ Jay Lane, founding member of Primus, currently in the RatDog lineup ~ and of course we have Joe Russo...half of the Benevento/Russo Duo.

Only shows announced thus far is a 3 night run in September at Oakland, CA's "Fox Theater."

Hopefully this expands into a full fledged tour, albeit one MUCH BETTER than this years, "The Dead" tour which I haven't heard a single really good thing about.

What this means for Benevento/Russo Duo and the other projects remains to be seen...

No Way! of the Day

This picture is making it's way around the net today.

Supposedly, it's Steven Tyler...yes...STEVEN TYLER of Aerosmith.

I really don't know what to think. It looks like a female Steven Tyler dressed as a grandma.

I'm confused...so let me know your take in the comments!
If you're the person who took this pic and can confirm anything...even better...shoot me an e-mail.

Monday Stress Relief

So you're just getting off the weekend and it's back to the grind. I'm going to try and take a proactive stance towards stress this week. Instead of pulling out my hair, I'm just going to smile and laugh.

Here's a great clip put together by the BBC of animals acting like humans. Good for a chuckle and great for the stress.

Bon Iver's New Project

Justin Vernon, the man you know as "Bon Iver", is back with a new side project called The Volcano Choir.

They vocals are what you would expect from Iver...if you don't know what that means, you probably missed his fantastic studio debut, "For Emma, Forever Ago".

What's different here is that Vernon's ethereal vocals are on top of electronic loops put together by Wisconsins, "Collections of Colonies of Bees".

Less emotional, more energy...I'm looking forward to what their album ("Unmap" release date: 09/22/09) brings. One thing I know off the bat, it will be great.

Here's a track off the album titled, "Island, IS" to give you a little taste:

...and like I said above, if you missed the original Bon Iver debut...well you missed something great. Pick it up in it's entirety...here's a taste of that though:

SONG - RE: Stacks

Australian Synthpop ...did you know such a thing exists?

Cut Copy - Hearts On Fire

Randomly heard this Australian synthpop group while snooping around on Zune Marketplace and they have been a welcome playlist addition ever since. They definitely have an 80's, Jazzy, Funk feel to them. Great music video too!

Lights & Music - Cut Copy

Another great showing of their style of music. This is actually the first song I heard by them. Its got a similar feel to it but still love them both. Can't say where this band is going but for now its got my attention.

Harrison Ford Puts His Family First

What more is there to say? When it comes to being a husband and a father...nobody does it better than Harrison Ford.

Don't believe me? Check out this video by YouTuber "BananasMalonas" and tell me you don't want him to be your pops.

[UPDATE] In an ironic twist...the brilliant writers for the show "Family Guy" have already mocked Harrison "Mr. Family" Ford.

This is why I love this show...

Call Me Barb

Left my number on the check at an Italian restaurant I went to for lunch.

She was hot...maybe Romanian.

Anyways, Barbara...if you're out there...give me a call baby...give me a call.

New Band You Never Heard Of...of the Day

The Magic Kids coming out of Memphis, TN.

These guys seem to be following the recent trend of throwback pop from the 50s/60s. It's a very fun, playful sound, with a hint of the Beach Boys if you ask me. A few bands have come around and attempted something similar with moderate success (The Explorer's Club...aynone?) So hopefully, these guys can draw a new line in the sand.

Like what you hear? Hate it? Post in the commentarios!

How Full House Could Have Been Empty House

This is an awesome parody of the "Full House" theme song.

VERY well done...that is all

The Guitar Scene from "Stranger Than Fiction"

This was a great flick. I remember sort of being against it at the time figuring Ferrell could only be good in dead pan comedy roles. Due to the demands of my girlfriend at the time, I sat through it, and I'm happy I did.

This scene still gives me goosebumps.

Go see it, it's called, "Stranger Than Fiction"...you get Ferrell, plus Maggie G. is a babe, plus you get Wreckless Eric's, "(I'd Go The) Whole Wide World" in the scene below. WIN - WIN - WIN!

The Most Horrible Thing I've Ever Seen Involving Cartoon Characters

Just...I'm speechless.

I really questioned about putting this one up on Coffee Con, but I know my other contributor, Aiden Sparrow, is a huge DT fan sooo...yeah.

How Bad Is The State of Delaware Exactly?

I have some friends who went to school and decided to setup shop and live in Delaware.

They seem to like it...but they haven't seen this cartoon by Dan Meth.

What do you think of the second smallest state in the country?

Best Cover You'll Hear All Month

Now this is awesome! Weezer took the time at a show in May to bust out back to back cover's.

They start with dead on impression of MGMT's, "Kids" and then segue into Lady Gaga's, "Poker Face".

This is a direction I like...a rock act mixing up their show with some solid pop covers.

The video is straight from Weezer's YouTube channel, so the vid/sound quality is great, perfect for blasting at your next party.

On a side note: Does it bother you when you get a cup of coffee and the 'barista' puts the lid on it so that the mouthpiece is right on the seam of the cup!? That pisses me off.

New Track of the Day - Radiohead Tribute to Harry Patch

Radiohead have released a new track titled, "Harry Patch (In Memory Of)", which is a dedication to the last surviving English veteran of WWI who passed away last week at the age of 111.

Truly a great honor for Harry Patch and a moving tribute to him by Thom Yorke and his band mates.

Radiohead, who are no stranger to digital distribution, released the track HERE where you can purchase it for about $1.50 or something.

Otherwise, you can stream it through the YouTube video below!

It's quite good, so ENJOY!

Major Lazer - "Pon De Floor" [NSFW]

I have no idea whats going on in this video, but its making the rounds because it happens to be directed by Eric Wareheim (yes...that's Eric of, "Tim and Eric" fame)

"Pon De Floor" must mean, "Pound the floor" or "Floor Porn" or something of that nature, so that said this is a tad NSFW...a lot of dry humping.

Just keep it under wraps and you'll be fine...really it's not that bad. No nudity.

Watch and Listen Wednesday: Modest Mouse

This is a new little series I'm starting up called, "Watch and Listen."

The plan is to choose artists whom I've heard a lot about but haven't had the time to get familiar with their catalog...and then do just exactly that by listening to a straight run through their studio albums. So that's the listen...but where's the watch?

I'll be streaming the whole listening experience LIVE so you too can join in on the action. You'll be able to hear the music as I hear it and see my reaction to each musical moment.

When all is said and done, I'll have heard each album, and will update the post to account for my opinion of album order from favorite to least favorite.

Today's W&L is: Modest Mouse

If I had a nickel for every time someone recommended I listen to Modest Mouse, I'd be writing this to you from my lunar surface module. Honestly, I really liked, "Float On" when it came out in 348 B.C., but I never had the gusto to get any deeper.

So this one's for you Isaac Brock...hit me with your best shot:

VIEW THE FEED
(opens a new window)

[W&L LISTENING UPDATE] - I've finally made it through all 5 studio albums by Modest Mouse. Let me tell you, this was some of the most fun I've had listening to music in a while. I certainly hope to keep my word and try to do one of thse "Watch & Listens" at least once a month. Met a few cool people in the uStream chat as well, so hopefully next time I can get a public chat going for all the watchers both from uStream as well as Coffee Con.

Anyways, the meat of W&L...my opinion on the album order from greatest to least greatest...here goes nothing:

1.) Good News For People Who Love Bad News (2004)

2.) The Moon & Antartica (2000)

3.) The Lonesome Crowded West (1997)

4.) We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank (2007)

5.) This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About (1996)

As I mentioned, this was my first undertaking of this sort. "Modest Mouse" was the perfect starting point. I feel like I really got to see how they progressed sonically...and hopefully with the next W&L I can go a little more in depth on my reasoning...a track list.

What do you think of Modest Mouse? Do you agree with my album order? Understandably the order is going to be different for each and every person. That's not even to say these are the best MM have offered either. These were simply their Studio works...no EP's or comp's at all which I've heard are equally as mouth watering.

JJ's Sense of Humor for the Day

Bwahaha, this clip is totally right in my sense of humor wheelhouse.

Glad YouTuber, "KnarleyBass" was able to snap this priceless reaction from Food TV's Paula Dean after eating a cupcake. It's just a god damn cupcake...what's her f-ing problem?

OMG...that first twitch a few seconds in gets me every time. Like laugh out loud, can't hold it in...

[UPDATE] - I turned it into a YTMND! Check it out!

Random Remix of the Day: AK-47th Heaven

I never watched much 7th Heaven, but I vaguely remember hearing some hullabaloo about this episode. This is from the "marijuana" episode where one of the kids brought a joint into the house and dad finds out. Uh Ohhhhh.

Great job on the remix which seems like a more manual process than using something like auto-tune. This allowed for some pretty hilarious scenes that are stitched together making the actors look like they're twitching to the beat.

These kids might not be going to heaven, but I'm sure they'll get pretty high.
(OK that was corny...I'll accept any berating loslosee)

"Snow Day" Puts Anything I've Ever Done To Shame

This is incredible!

The guys over at BoingBoing.net just posted about this incredibly talented 8 year old Emma, who performed at the Coffee Shop Jam at The Columbia City Theater in Seattle, Washington. These jam sessions are, "...a chance for music students to perform in a real music venue for an enthusiastic crowd." What an awesome idea...hats off to whomever started that.

I'll say it again, she's EIGHT, and she's already written and performed her own song titled, "Snow Day" (Video below)

Emma has a wonderful future ahead of her in the music world...and I'd imagine that makes her one heckuva popular 3rd grader!

Meme I Missed of the Day - "Why Must I Cry"

Wow, with over 2 million hits...I'm clearly late on the boat with this one.

Ummm...I guess I'll call him "rapper", Reh Dogg, performing a song called, "Why Must I Cry".

You too should get the tissues out and prepare to cry, because this video is absolutely hilarious...and sadly, I'm not sure if it's a joke or a serious effort at music.

Hilarious Dancing Mascot of the Day

Who knew you could even do those moves inside a costume like that!?

Taking "Mascot-ism" to a whole new level, this bulldog completely owns the regular street dancing character. That guy is having nightmares with huge yellow bulldogs in them now.

Ease Into The Monday

It's Monday...which means back your desk, or your baseball field, or your polo grounds, or your forest, or your cave, or whatever you may do during the week to earn the ka-ching, bling bling, ooo chee wally wally.

Whatever you're doing, wherever you are, the follow tracks, will keep the bad vibes afar.

Akron/Family - "They Will Appear, Behold"

MGMT - "The Kids Quartet"

The One Man Rap Tour

This is an awesome video of...I believe, comedian/impressionist Aries Spears.

Talk about talent, this guy can seriously start his own tour with just a set of speakers and Mic.

Watch him here on a radio show imitating LL Cool J, DMX, Snoop, and Jay-Z.
