George Brett's Accident Gets The Autotune Treatment

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I love things auto-tuned, that shouldn't ever be auto-tuned.

Take for example, this conversation that Hall of Famer George Brett had with his team during some stretches. Just a quick note: the actual video is about 30 second clip of George Brett talking about a time he shit his pants in public. That's actually what it is and it's not overdubbed (search for it and you'll see). So this is more like an auto-tuned theme song for an ex-lax commercial.

Hip Hop Icon Friday - Jay Z

Many faces have helped shape hip hop over the year's, but only few have helped it cross over to the mainstream audience while still keeping their integrity. Jay Z has come up in a true rags to riches story, surpassing all that challenged him and sat himself right at the top of the business.

Everyone may not like him, but they all know him. Below is a video retrospective of some of the best songs in his career. Chronologically of course.

Reasonable Doubt - Feelin' It

In My Lifetime Vol 1 - The City is Mine

Are you trying to get a rise out of me agent rappenport?

Two-fer from this album, the next song had to make the list:

In My Lifetime Vol 1 - Who You Wit

Vol. 2...Hard Knock Life - Money Aint a Thang

Vol. 3...Life and Times of S. Carter - Big Pimpin

One of his worse albums, unfortunately this is the best song I could pull from it, but to each his own.

The Dynasty: Roc La Familia - This Can't Be Life

The Blueprint - Song Cry

I would call this album the redeemer. His albums took an unfortunate poppy turn in the late 90's (hence Big Pimpin) but this was a glorious return to his true talent. Showcasing some of his best work, he slows it down in Song Cry, gets militaristic in Heart of the City, and makes one of his best songs with Eminem in Renegade.

The Blueprint: The Gift - Excuse Me Miss

The Black Album - Change Clothes

This might be the pinnacle, with numerous must haves on this one. Also began the Brush Your Shoulders Off movement.

The Black Album - Numb/Encore

The Black Album - 99 Problems

Can't help but get pumped listening to this one.

Some Miscellaneous Loving
Brooklyn We Go Hard - Jay Z and Santogold

Random but one of his many remixes that have been great.

Kingdom Come - Beach Chair

A couple other good ones on this album, but the very end was capped off with Beach Chair. It was different enough to catch my attention, but gotta mention the more popular Show Me What You Got.

This rounds out the count down. I know there has been a bunch left out, but it was only a song per album (with some minor exceptions). He's also had countless cameos in songs and plenty that were left off the list. Upset a favorite didn't make the post? Think something that was featured shouldn't have been (ahem Big Pimpin). Let me know, comment below.

Reason To Love David Byrne of the Day

David Byrne, an artist I thoroughly enjoy, took a jab at U2 in his blog today.

Can't help but think he's got a point and I really hope Bono responds!

What do you think?

Here's the excerpt:
Thank You U2!

Mark E pointed out as we prepped for our show last night in Warsaw (at a not so big club/venue called Stodoła) that these undersized dates are in effect being subsidized by U2’s world tour. The promoter of these dates, and of much of the U2 stadium tour, is Live Nation, the global conglomerate. A venue like Stodoła could not possibly afford to pay for us, the catering, or even their local crew given the relatively small number of tickets to be sold here — and it’s not even an “exclusive” VIP-type venue. It’s not like they can charge $200 a seat and make up their losses that way — this is a standing room club… with a floor made of plywood. So in order to book our date, they must (we figure) be losing money now, then making it up with what they expect to earn on the upcoming U2 stadium dates.

Those stadium shows may possibly be the most extravagant and expensive (production-wise) ever: $40 million to build the stage and, having done the math, we estimate 200 semi trucks crisscrossing Europe for the duration. It could be professional envy speaking here, but it sure looks like, well, overkill, and just a wee bit out of balance given all the starving people in Africa and all. Or maybe it’s the fact that we were booted off our Letterman spot so U2 could keep their exclusive week-long run that’s making me less than charitable? Take your pick — but thanks, guys!

Friday Morning Cure: David Bowie - "Subterraneans"

For those of you who took my, "Thursday is the new Friday" comment from yesterday to heart...here is your Friday morning cure :)

Off of David Bowies 1977 release, "Low" the track is called, "Subterraneans"

Pearl Jam Start A Scavenger Hunt

By now I'm sure you've heard that Pearl Jam are back in a big way.

After re-releasing a deluxe edition of their 18 year old debut, "Ten" in March of this year, they quickly followed with even better news...their first new studio album since their 2006 self-titled release.

The new album, "Backspacer" is set to release September 22, 2009. Legions of die hard PJ fans have been anticipating the release since the band appeared on Conan's first week as host of The Tonight Show and debuted the cover art as well as the song, "Get Some".

Conan Appearance:

With the release date approaching the band has started a sort of online Easter Egg Hunt, without the religious connotations, of course.

Scattered around the web...with no specific websites given...are links to the 9 mini-images (drawn by political cartoonist Tom Tomorrow) that grace the full "Backspacer" cover. One image per website, so there are nine sites you have to figure out and click the image. Upon collecting all nine (clicking the 9 images on their respective website) you are presented with a freebie that Pearl Jam says is, "...better than the usual free live mp3 download".

I'll help you out and get you started, but its up to you to find the others!

Click the picture from this Wired.com article to get going!

Here's what the album art looks like in its entirety:

Personally, I think this is a great idea for the band to raise awareness for their album and keep their fans occupied and excited for the release! Have fun!

Mellow Your Thursday and It's Almost Friday

Got a great track that I've been meaning to post and talk about.

It's off of Albert Hammond Jr's (of The Strokes) most recent studio release "Como Te Llama" and the song is titled: SPOOKY COUCH

This song just puts me into the perfect mood towards the end of a Thursday. Work is winding down. Few more hours to go until Friday...and you know they say Thursday is the new Friday.

So sit back, kick on this tune, and close your eyes...and if a co-worker asks what your doing...send them here. They'll understand.

The good news: Signed to "Anti- Records", also the home to some of the greats like Tom Waits, Nick Cave and Mavis Staples.

The more good news: They are in the works on a brand new album due out in early 2010 described to be similar to but different from the stuff we've heard so far. A lot of which has to do with Dr. Dog coming together as a band as opposed to just a musical project over the years.

Highly reccomend you catch them on this tour if you can...and tell your friends. This is one of those bands where you'll be, "That Guy" who introduces someone to their new favorite music.

Stephanie of Suburbia

So has anyone heard this story yet about last nights Green Day show at MSG and the now famous Stephanie?

Apparently at one point during the show, Billie Joe Armstrong asked the crowd if anyone knew how to play guitar and few chords. After questioning a few of the people up front, he found a punk rock chick named Stephanie who was "moshing". LULZ.
She confirmed she could play the song, Jesus of Suburbia, and she was whisked up on stage.

Little did she know, she was about to go from audience member to band member, and not at some skeezy club, but MADISON SQUARE GARDEN. From what I heard...she completely ripped on guitar. Which begs the question was the whole thing planned or is she just a complete Green Day fanatic?

Well see for yourself, now there are tons of videos getting posted to the YouTube.

Fan vid of her playing:

Fans chanting her name...normally a good feeling...but this is Madison Square Garden:

Andrew WK Tells The Weather LIKE IT IS!

I thought this was a really funny way to start off your Tuesday.

Looks like musician, entertainer (really?), and all around weird guy Andrew WK stopped by a FOX affiliated TV station in Oklahoma and got do something many of has only dreamed of...give the weather report.

He actually does a solid job, I would watch him religiously if he was the new Roker...honestly. On target and hilarious at the same time. Might be his best gig to date.

Burn Your Eyes of the Day: Dober-Man

No words...can express how scared I am.

Anyone have ANY sort of information on this creeper?

Thanks to the "related videos" I found out this guy is...EVEN CRAZIER THAN I ONCE THOUGHT!

The Week Is Half Over Celebration: "Loco Mia"

The work day is done and tomorrow is Thursday! Some of you, myself included, may even have a summer Friday this week...so your weekend actually starts tomorrow.

For the others, well...just get your body groovin' with some Loco Mia. A popular (I think?) Spanish pop group from the early 90's. Lots of YouTube comments on this one, but a majority are in Spanish, so I'd imagine their presence stateside was minimal.

Come on, who doesn't like men in frilly dresses twirling fans? WHO!?

The Phenomenal Handclap Band

Another electronic/indie act coming out of where else? NYC.

Though do not lob these extremely talented musicians into the same category as say, Ratatat or Discovery. Albeit similar...I get much more disco vibe from this music.

It's much poppier, easier to get into, and absurdly catchy.

Here's a video for, what I'd imagine to be their first single as I'm seeing it crop up among a few other blogs today:

I recommend you check their MySpace here, in particular the track, "All of the Above" which I couldn't find a video for.

Your Business Card Is Crap

This is a recent addition to my YouTube favorites but it's already working it's way up into my personal Top 10.

Meet Joel Bauer, he's a douche and knows it, and he uses his business card to show it.

Perhaps he could have taken the 25 years of business card ideas and used that time to become a little more personable?

Either way, it's hilarious...

Kill An Hour: Blitzen Trapper Stop by KCRW

My favorite touring act of the moment Blitzen Trapper made a stop over at KCRW for an amazing in-studio session.

SoCal's KCRW is no stranger to these performances, and neither is BT who often stop mid-tour for these mini sessions, most notably the Daytrotter Sessions (I think they've done, what, 4 of them now?)

Really outdid themselves here, you can see that the touring helped them hone the "Furr" stuff (that's their p-h-e-n-o-m-e-n-a-l album they put out in late '08). An effortless performance that should help you mentally drift away from your desk for an hour so. It's Tuesday, I know you need that as much as I do!

Enjoy and head over to their official site for tour dates, more vids, and a solid community of fans - http://blitzentrapper.net/

Kid Cudi - "Make Her Say"

I'm still hesitant to give in to a lot of new hip hop these days.
Hell I was WAAY past my prime on Weezy, whos Carter III I just now put on my ipod.

So when I heard some friends talking about Kid Cudi I jumped right on it, but didn't expect much. "Day n Nite" was all over the place, one hit wonder I figured.
I downloaded his debut mixtape, "A Kid Named Cudi" (Still available for free DL) and gave it a spin. "Solid stuff.", I thought to myself, but wasn't going to go around touting him until he dropped something official.

Sure enough, Cudi announced his debut studio album, "Man on the Moon: The End of Day" for release in August and my golly gee whiz if it doesn't feature some of the biggest names on...every music scene. Everyone from Kanye, to MGMT, to Ratatat (whom I talk up a lot on this blog) make an appearance on the album.

Just found this video for the song, "Make Her Say" which also includes the likes of Kanye West and common. Not only is it a good song, but the video is very impressive. See what you think. Next big thing? Guess we'll have to wait until August...

A Very En-Chanting Experience

A track thats not quite electronic/techno/house its something all on its own. Its a mixture of almost hip hop baselines and beats, with the dreamy sounds of electronic, and a mesmerizing chant. All these elements together prepare to take you on a musical journey, its really an experience.

If you like this check out some Discovery, JJ has posted about them a couple times down below.

Monsters of Folk Want You To Mind Your Manners

Do you know who the "Monsters of Folk" are?

If you happen to enjoy the music I post on this blog, I'm sure you're in on this newly created 'supergroup'. Though I haven't posted about them before, I've certainly mentioned each one of them individually.

...so what is it?

Jim James (a.k.a. Yim Yames, solo, My Morning Jacket), Conor Oberst (solo, Bright Eyes), M. Ward (solo, She & Him), and Mike Mogis (producer, instrumentalist)

Ladies and gentlemen, THEY are the "Monsters of Folk".

Simply put, this could be the biggest album release of 2009 (slated for 9/22/09)

At 10am this morning I got an email from their mailing list offering a free download of the track, "Say Please" off their upcoming debut.

All you have to do is...say, Please. Literally.

Head over to their site, and look on the right side for a text box and the text:

"IF YOU’D LIKE TO GET A FREE DOWNLOAD OF
“SAY PLEASE”, ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS SAY... "

Then just type in please, click the submit button, and viola! You are streaming the first sounds the band has so far publicly released. It's some great summertime stuff, so get at it immediately and don't forget...buy the album when it drops. It's one you'll want to physically own and not just 'steal' off the interweb.

Thank You

Never Gonna Give Your Teen Spirit Up

Here's a great way to start your Monday morning!

DJ Morgoth out of Germany put together this mash-up of Nirvana's, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" with Rick Astley's, "Never Gonna Give You Up" (...yep the ever classic Rick roll song.)

The perfect mashup got a perfect video to go along with it by YouTuber 'thriftshopxl'

Great teamwork all around guys...

Joanna Newsom - "Peach, Plum, Pear"

Made friends with my neighbor who lives in apartment 3F.

We were chilling, when outta nowhere she jumped up and told me I had to check out this video by Joanna Newsom. I had heard the name before, but never any of her music so I really didn't know what to expect. (Especially since I just met my neighbor only 30 minutes earlier)

Here's what she played:

"WOW!" was all I could muster up. This chick has got Talent with a capital T. To write music like that, play it on the harp, and sing it with a voice that sounds like equal parts nails on a chalkboard/cat screeching at night...and yet it sounds this beautiful is amazing.

What's your take? Voice of an angel? I feel like either you love it or you hate it, there's no in between, so lemme know in the comments!

Carrie Brownsteins Adventure Into the World of Phish

Carrie Brownstein, of Sleater-Kinney fame and now NPR blogger, is underway in her latest adventure which she announced through her blog in a post titled, "How I stopped Worrying And Learned to Love Phish".

She basically has no working knowledge of Phish other than the fact that they have a huge following. So what better way to catch up on all she's missed then to dive head first right into their collection. Sure, Phish convert new phans on a regular basis, but Carrie is different since she herself has had an accomplished musical career. So it will be interesting to hear her take on the band, the songs, the albums, the live shows, ...everything.

This is one hell of an awesome experiment and following her progress will most likely become your newest addiction.

So totally head over to her 'Monitor Mix' blog and check out her updates.

Below is a quick vid from Day 2 of her conversion journey...buying her first Phish CD's.

Top 9 Board Game Commercials/Songs of the 80's and 90's

I wouldn't say I have the greatest memory, but I'm very nostalgic when it comes to the entertainment of youth. You saw my most recent list of 5 excellent old school TV show theme songs and 9 great old Disney rides. Well now I have something new to present...

These are the commercials for some of my favorite childhood board games. I'm talking the biggies from the early 80's to early 90's. Granted some of these games existed even earlier under a different name or in some other form, but these are the ones I remember growing up.

9) Pizza Party

Awesome game. I know I completely forgot about this one until the time of writing.

8) Splat
This one I never owned to be honest...I'm sure I wanted it but I can hear my mother complaining about it being a "mess" even today. Still one thing is for sure...the commercial was on non-stop and it's one I've never forgotten.

7) Lite Brite
Not really a board game but it's up there with one of the more memorable songs on a TV commercial. So I'll put it at number eight. This is the one I remember from the early 90's. I'm pretty sure some form of 'Lite Brite' was around when Happy Days debuted, ha!

6) Monster Mash
I probably used this game more than any other. I specify "used" because while I played it a lot, I also can remember my friends and I getting into slap fights with sticks. (Sorry the quality sucks, but its the best I could find)

5) Shark Attack
Another one I played a lot of with my family. I thought the shark was the coolest thing.

4) Hungry Hippos
We're getting into the more well known territory here. This has to be one of Milton Bradley's best sellers right here. In fact, this post was spawned because I'm pretty sure I overheard this same commercial on TV earlier this week. Gotta love that they recycle the commercial. Just don't make'em like they used to.

3) Grape Escape
Another one involving Play Doh creations. This theme song inspired me to become more enthralled in my Italian heritage than any other game out there.

2) Guess Who
This is another one that existed prior to my being born, but this one below is from when I played. This is the one that got me hooked and to be honest, I think this game is still fun as hell. They should totally update it for adults.

1) Crossfire
No game epitomizes 90's TV commercials better than this game. Though the game itself, like others, originally came to fruition in the 70's, this is the first television commercial for it. Just look at that intro! The cheering crowd, fire pits, and more insanity.

...but wait...it gets better...

In my search for this ever classic video, I stumbled across the greatest tribute of all time. Scott Gairdner created this awesome piano ballad version of the commercial and I'm not sure my life will ever be the same having heard it. Pure genius.

Do you have any board game commercials you remember from this era? Something I may have forgotten? Post them up in the comments. I can just see your brain thinking already...let me get you started..."Thin Ice".

Uncomfortable Moment of the Week

From a direct-to-video film titled, "Creating Rem Lezar", about a child's imaginary friend that comes to life.

Back in the 80's predators didn't have the internet, so they used THE MINDS OF CHILDREN!!!!

Soulful Commercial of the Day: Mr. Spriggs BBQ

If the delicious looking BBQ doesn't get ya...then our hot off the press R&B/Soul jam will.

Mmmmmm baby....Mmmmmmm.

Levon Helm Is Grateful

Levon Helm is best known as the drummer for the legendary rock group, The Band.

The man needs no introduction. In fact I saw him at Mountain Jam in 2008 and he completely stoked the crowd playing old classics along with new hits off his 2007 album, "Dirt Farmer".

At the end of June 2009, he released another fantastic album, "Electric Dirt".

The first track off this album is a cover of the song, "Tennessee Jed" made popular by the 'greatest band in the land', The Grateful Dead.

Levon's version of this track hits the mark with grace and class. A tribute to the other great musical pioneers of his time, while adding a touch of his own genius in all the right places.

David Letterman had Levon on his Late Show at the end of last week and what track do you suppose he chose to play? You guessed it...I hope:

(...and how sweet is that album cover? Very Terrapin Station-y if I do say so myself.)

Concurrent Drummers World Record Broken!

That's right...the new Guinness approved world record is now 582 drummers drumming to the same beat for 5 minutes.

This was broken yesterday in Birmingham UK (as reported best by The Daily Mail) in an effort to raise money/awareness for Multiple Sclerosis.

I'm sure there will be some better quality vids hitting the web sooner than later but this one by YouTuber and proud drum Mom, sdb1305, appears to be the first.

Patch In Denim

A good friend of mine, who's name can be gathered from his blog, put this together a while back. It garnered minor fame at inception due to it's quirkiness and obvious use of generic visual effects. A little "hehe" and "haha" if you will.

Since then I've realized there's something deeper here. This is no mere, 'video clip'. It transcends the conventional YouTube wisdom of some amateur creating a video for kicks. This is an open ended human interest piece that may mean something completely different to you as it does to me.

So tell us in the comments, what do you feel as you watch this?

(Song Credit: My Morning Jacket - "The Bear")

Classic Boogie of the Week

I got home from work yesterday and in usual fashion, plopped onto the couch and turned on the TV. Known for having a notoriously bizarre taste in television, I decided to flip to one of the classic movie channels to see what was on.

What I saw equally entertained and creeped me out. (Movies filmed in black and white always creep me out...I need to get that checked out)

It's a scene from an early 1940's Abbot and Costello movie, "Buck Privates". I'm sure my grandparents would have been proud of me watching it.

Does this creep you out? (Come on...not even that up and down shoulder shrug at the 00:37 mark?)

Observant Phish Phans May Have Noticed...

...California is the most recent state to be removed from the list of possible Halloween Festival locations.

This is huge news because the rumor's abound have been that it was scheduled for the Polo Grounds in Indio, CA. Clearly, this is not the case, which leads us to wonder...what's the next big guess? (Fingers crossed for NY, though that's highly unlikely!)

Usually, the past flash sequences would remove multiple states, but I'd imagine since there was such a buzz about Cali. being the de facto locale, they solely removed it from the map with a series of 4 hot air balloons! (SEE BELOW):

I know a lot of people had hotels booked in Indio...hope there's no cancellation fees.

Got an idea where you think it's going to end up? Show us some love in the comments...and reserve us a hotel spot while your at it? Pretty please??

Don't Stop Til You...Yada Yada Yada

What is there to say about this fine piece of entertainment?

Berry Gordy said Michael Jackson was, "The greatest entertainer that ever lived" at his memorial service in the Staples Center. I would put "Seinfeld" in the leagues of, "Greatest entertainment to ever be on television".

Therefore, you're watching the greatest video to ever grace the internet...REJOICE!

5 Excellent TV Theme Songs

I could probably do a "Top 1,000 TV Theme Songs" post with the amount of television knowledge I have in my brain. So for the sake of your time and my time I will just pick 5 of my favorites right now but with some sort of narrow categorization.

In this case, these shows involve live actors and actresses. (i.e. The theme to "Ducktales" will not be included in this list...but perhaps in a later one!)

That said, it's difficult to put them in any order either. I mean, that's based on a lot of things including how long the show was on air, how popular it was, it's cult status since being off the air, etc. Not to mention my age plays a big role. For instance, you will not see the "Dick Tracy" theme here as, I'm not sure who played Dick Tracy, let alone what the theme song is. These are the cult classics from early 80's - mid 90's.

So in no particular order, I bring you 5 of the greatest:

5) Growing Pains
A staple among television theme songs. I can remember sitting down at the table for dinner as a kid and hearing this theme in the background. God the Seaver family was SO LONG ISLAND!

4) Hanging With Mr. Cooper
This show's intro was the best. So funky, so psychadelic and groovy. Like the Simpsons, there was a few seasons where Marc would come on at the end of the theme and say something new each time. This one just has some random guy scatting, but it's equally hilarious/awesome. (NOTE: How hilarious is Sandra Quarterman's dance moves at the 17s mark?)

3) Living Single
Wow! What a show. Really opened my eyes to the possibilities of Queen Latifah, whom I only knew previously for her excellent U.N.I.T.Y. which was all over MTV. That said, my favorite character was Overton (aka "Obie") who was the upstairs neighbor. +5 Extra trivia bonus for anyone who remembers the promotion they did with, "smell-o-vision" where you went to 7-11 and got a special card with numbers on it. During the episode, a number would pop up and you would scratch and sniff, and it would be the smell of an object on the show. Amazing.

2) Family Matters
Anyone who knows anything about me or my sense of humor knew that this one was coming. I probably should have saved it for a later list, perhaps "The Best TGIF Theme Songs", but I have to get it out of the way now. What can I say...TGIF had a great lineup of programming. Did I do that?

1) Step By Step
Good old Suzanne Somers and the ever manly Patrick Duffy had one heck of a dysfunctional family. That said, Step By Step always taught you a life lesson and if not...well you're probably following in the footsteps of Cody right now, brah.

As mentioned, this was VERY difficult because there's so many songs I want to include. Expect another one shortly by myself or another cohort and feel free to submit your favorites in the comments!

The Catchiest Songs I Know Nothing About

I simply can't say much about these songs, because I don't know anything about 'em. What I can tell outright is that they're in Italian...that's about it.

For this first one, Leone Di Lernia is the artist...I think?
The name of the song is, "Basta Con L'Iva Sui Rifiuti"...I think?

Either way its catchy as hell and the video is hilarious. Try to turn the sound off and I bet you still laugh. I have no idea why.

This one is very similar to my B4-4 post...it seems like an italian version of the Backstreet Boys. Again, what they're talking about I have no idea...but it's just so damn catchy.

Palin....Breathe Out

This video is too hilarious for it's own good. My hats off to RumpRoast.com for putting it together.

Finally something about Sarah Palin we can all laugh about that isn't about what she's saying, but rather what she isn't saying.

I almost want to add a beat to this...but I'm sure someone will beat me to it. I can see it now, "Sarah Palin with Autotune Breathing"

Asian Weird Al of the Day: Ching Chang Chong

Came across this great parody of the Black Eyed Peas', "Boom Boom Pow" by what appears to be an asian version of Weird Al Yankovic.

The artist known as Rucka Rucka Ali (CD/MP3's on Amazon) performs a very stereotypical version of the song titled, "Ching Chang Chong". It's hilarious and very well done. No disrespeck.

Reed KD

I was scouring through some reviews of this years HSMF 2009.
(That's the "High Sierra Music Festival" for the acronym handicapped.)

Lots of good stuff and pouring in for the usual artists and appearances. There is however one name that kept coming up I hadn't heard much of.

Reed KD - http://www.myspace.com/reedkd

A singer-songwriter from Nor-Cal who focuses on a unique mix of indie/folk/bluegrass...and does it damn well. For those of you who like one but not all of the aforementioned genres, I highly recommend you give him a shot. Seems like just the guy who can help you break down a few musical borders. I myself am going to dig a little deeper, so let me know if you know where I can hear more, find more, see more about this up and comer!

Michael Jackson Memorial Service @ The Staples Center

I happened to take a quick lunch break during the MJ memorial services with a co-worker of mine and wanted to stop off at Times Square to see if there was anything going on. I knew Harlem had a gathering and much to my chagrin, so did Times Square.

That's when I heard my coworker screaming at me to look up...and when I did...I saw this:

Yes, that is me. The only time I will share a stage with Stevie and I couldn't be happier about the occasion. To celebrate the life of Michael Jackson.

(Here's a link to the official YouTube video, though I expect it to be gone soon since its a direct copy of the CNN broadcast: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZ-XHsokvgc - I pop in around the 3:50 mark)

It's funny, because the co-worker I was with is French. The only thing he kept reiterating was that there will never be another global superstar like Michael again. No truer words have ever been spoken and I'm happy that he is seen that way around the world as well.

Top 9 Disney Ride Theme Songs

I was, and for the most part still am, a huge enthusiast of Disney World.
Yes that is Disney WORLD in Florida, which is clearly more superior to the Disney LAND of California. It truly is the happiest place on Earth and I have no doubt that I would get the same rush of feelings and emotions there now as I did when I was a kid. From the Magic Kingdom to Epcot Center, I've encountered quite a few rides in my day. I'd imagine that while some still exist, a majority of them have been replaced with more modern fanfare. That's to be expected I guess, but here at Coffee Con, I never let a good thing die.

Below is a list of my Top 9 Favorite Disney World ride theme songs. Encompassing all rides from past to present.(Though who are we kidding...everyone knows The Carousel of Progress', "Now Is the Time" was WAY better than the current, "Great Big Beautiful Tomorow".)

9) Food Rocks
This was in "The Land" pavilion at Epcot and was a complete show put on by audio-animatronic food robots. It promoted a healthy living specifically in regards to foods and nutrition. The genius part of the show was the spin on actual real life artists and songs. For example, Pita Gabriel performed, "High Fiber" instead of Sledgehammer and The Peach Boys played, "Good Nutrition" instead of Good Vibration.

8) Journey Into Imagination
Another Epcot classic that has had a few incarnations over time. If you were able to leave this ride without singing, "Immmaaaaaaaaaaginaaaation" the rest of the day, you have no soul.

7) Michael Jackson's "Captain EO"
Arguably one of the most legendary rides at Epcot Center, and I'm not saying that simply as a devout Michael fan as this blog could attest, Captain EO was simply an amazement. Part movie and part musical, Michael again provied to everyone that he was the king of not just pop, but entertainment. Not to mention it was the first movie in 3D that actually blew me away.

6) Carousel of Progress
Ahhh the carousel of progress. I can only hope that some incarnation of this ride still exists in the Magic Kingdom. Originally created for the 1964 NY World's Fair, the ride was a journey through the past, present and future of a typical American household. I can remember going in the early 90's and hearing my favorite, "Now Is The Time" jingle (The song featured in the embedded video below). Upon going back for the 2000 Millennium celebration I was confused to hear that the song had changed to the newer, "Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow". Either way, it was still just as much fun to take in.

5) The Haunted Mansion
Another "epic" ride at the Magic Kingdom, the Haunted Mansion has always scared the crap out of me since I was a kid. I had forgotten until recently that the mansion was actually closed in order to spruce things up and was re-opened to the public in 2007. While granted, there is no real "theme song" for this ride...I'm focusing on the intro to the ride where you stand in a room and watch as the room appears to grow right in front of your eyes. (Still not exactly sure what happens here, haha, is it an elevator trick or something?) See below for exactly what I'm talking about, very memorable part of the ride.

4) Country Bear Jamboree
Another Frontier land creepy classic, though unintentionally, the Country Bear Jamboree always was a pit stop for my family. I'm pretty sure at the time, my parents enjoyed this one more than I did, but I surely enjoyed taking in the animatronic bears. Especially the large and tone deaf, "Big Al".

3)Main Street Electrical Parade
Another one that just epitomizes late night Disney(It was featured in Disney World, Disneyland and the Disneys of Tokyo, and Paris). At the time I enjoyed the dazzling lights and the characters running amok in Magic Kingdom, but I'd imagine seeing this now would make me say, "Wow, what did we eat during the character breakfast? I must be tripping. " Here you can find an awesome home video of the Disneyland parade and I've also embedded the official soundtrack which is awesome quality. Perhaps I can get it up here as a D/L on .mp3. I'd love to just blast this during a night on the town.

2)The Pirates of the Caribbean

You knew this was going to be on the list pretty high up there. One of the most memorable rides in Magic Kingdom that has since sparked a movie and been updated with new characters. Also, who can forget the area surrounding the ride with all the fake toy guns and swords. I think I begged for a different one each time I went. I'm sure my parents loved me chanting, "Yo ho, yo ho a pirates life for me!" while pretending to swig a giant bottle of booze.

1) It's A Small World
...need I say more? An easy, albeit cliche, choice for number one. Forever ingrained in our brains as children and left there, only to be pulled out from the deepest brain layers whenever someone happens to say, "small world" in passing. Try it now...go up to your co-worker, boss, whoever and try to finagle, "It's a small world after all" into the conversation...see how he/she responds.

Space Junk and Space Waste

Rhett and Link have been the source of some great videos around the interweb.

Their popularity has gone mainstream and they created this amazing video for the Science Channel's show, "Brink"

You know what you're getting with this one, after all...stupid is as stupid does, but they do stupid well. Enjoy!

Blitzen Trapper...Need I Say More?

Everything these guys touch is gold.

Their newest, "Furr" released at the end of last year rather quietly. Here's a live version of the album titled track. Easily setting the bar to beat for the year...we're still waiting

AND

Here's a rad video for their track, "Wild Mountain Nation"

I've had the urge to post this for a long time now. I had a very similar post on the old blog, before we moved to this location on Blogger, so I gave it some time to die down before I re-posted. This 4th of July I pretty much played a solid hour of studio/live BT stuff and it reminded me I needed to post it again.

Enjoy and get into 'em while you can. Count on Coffee Con to keep you up to date with any new happenings as well.

End The Day On A High Note: "Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport"

For anyone with a case of the Monday's this should put a smile on your face :)

Found this gem on an old CD my co-worker Bruce gave me.
It was a disc full of MP3's with a simple word on the front of it in sharpie:

OLDIES

Had to check it out...and this song jumped out at me. Not simply because of the bizarre lyrics, but because of the names he was dropping. Sure enough, this track is by Australian/British musician Rolf Harris and features the backing vocals/instruments of none other than, The Beatles.

There's plenty of info about it on Wikipedia to wet your palette, but I'll provide you with the lyrics that drew my attention and of course the song itself. Sounds like they are truly having a blast recording this one.

"Cut yer hair once a year boys, (repeat), If it covers your ears you can't hear boys, so (repeat first line)."
"Don't ill-treat me pet dingo, Ringo, (repeat). He can't understand your lingo, Ringo, so (repeat first line)."
"George’s guitar's on the blink, I think, (repeat), It shouldn't go plinkety plink, no, (repeat first line)."
"Prop me up by the wall, Paul, (repeat), 'Cause if you don't I might fall, Paul, so (repeat first line)."
"Keep the hits coming on, John, (repeat), 'Til long long after I've gone, John, just (repeat first line)."

What Matters Mondays: Apollo Sunshine - "Money"

Something just feels awry with the state of the world at this moment in time, in the year 2009. Surrounded by death, destruction, war, and politics...it's easy to get lost and forget what is important.

I'm currently in the search for a job. It's got me down quite a bit. Stressed is probably a good word to sum it up. Combine that with the aforementioned state of planet Earth and you can really start to lose focus of what matters.

Recently I've been trying to put everything back into perspective. Focusing on who and what will matter in the long term. While yes, a job/career is a big stepping stone on the path to overall happiness, I'm not going to let that decide my actions in the present. No more spending a weekend tweaking my resume or turning down lunch with Mom for a spur of the moment interview.

This song came on during my usual morning jaunt to catch the train into work. It pretty much re-instilled my recent realization. I hope it motivates you to focus on what really matters around you.

Happy Independence Day America!

I hope everyone woke this morning to the chanting of U.S.A! U.S.A.!

If not, it's ok you still have time...be sure to break the chant out at your BBQ or other festivities.

Happy 4th of July from Coffee Con!!

I Still Miss You MJ

Unbelievable...I'm still sort of devastated by the death of Michael Jackson.

Not in a like a cry-my-eyes-out-nightly way but just, shock and awe.

I read an interview with MJ's close friend, Liza Minelli, who said something along the lines of (don't quote me here)..."When the autopsy/toxicology results are released, all hell is going to break loose. So I am glad we can celebrate Michael now."

Clearly, MJ had issues with pills that should have been addressed. Perhaps they were at some point, but it's hard to tell someone to break an addiction. Especially when that person is the king of pop.

Anyways, CNN just posted this video of MJ doing rehearsals for his final tour. It is from June 23rd...just 2 days before his life would end. So tragic. Almost hard to watch. R.I.P.

Talking Heads DVD is Phenomenal

Until about a month ago, I would have said at any given time that my favorite music DVD was the, "Last Waltz" by The Band. Directed by Martin Scorsese, it wasn't just a concert DVD, but rather an epic masterpiece. The final show was a crowning achievement and certainly solidified the legendary legacy of The Band.

Last month my neighbor Joel, the only other avid Talking Heads fan I hang out with, handed me a copy of, "Stop Making Sense". I knew what I was getting into. After all I have been listening to the Heads for many years, though I myself wasn't quite of age during their prime. I'd also consider myself well versed in many of the musical undertakings of David Byrne. Apparently I was missing something...so I popped in the DVD.

What came next was the stuff dreams are made of. "The Heads" and company put on a show of epic proportions. They are in another universe filled with drugged up unicorns and dinosaurs with human limbs. (Not literally, it's mostly just a black backdrop, haha, but thats what I felt!)
This is their "Last Waltz"...a dizzying array of sound, harmony, and visuals.

Words can't express, so I recommend you pick this up yourself or check it out however you can. It's a must for any Talking Heads fan or the musically challenged.

(Gotta give credit to Mark at BoingBoing who pretty much beat me to this post today. I had it in the back of my mind to write something up about this marvelous release. Thanks for the reminder!)

Not to take everything from BB, here's an impressive version of, "Heaven" from the "Stop Making Sense" DVD I've been ranting about. Sonically and lyrically this track is magnificent...and quite different from the studio efforts. The overall quality/crispness is exactly what you'll get from the DVD.

The Dodo's Announce Third LP, "Time To Die"

The big news in the indie world today is the announcement of a new Dodo's album titled, "Time To Die".

This will be the third full length and you can expect more of the duo's usual "punchy-percussion" indie rock, but this time you might find a surprise. They've got a new member who actually jams out on the vibraphone on the tracks. Listen for it amongst the rest of the beautiful noise the guys make.

For the uninformed, you can find a few tracks for their '08 release, "Visiter" below!
